The Sizes and Luminosities of Massive Star Clusters

چکیده
The masses of star clusters range over seven decades, from ten up to one hundred million solar masses. Remarkably, clusters with masses in the range 10M⊙ to 10M⊙ show no systematic variation of radius with mass. However, recent observations have shown that clusters with Mcl & 3× 10M⊙ do show an increase in size with increasing mass. We point out that clusters with Mcl & 10M⊙ were optically thick to far infrared radiation when they formed, and explore the hypothesis that the size of clusters with Mcl & 3×10M⊙ is set by a balance between accretion powered radiation pressure and gravity when the clusters formed, yielding a massradius relation rcl ∼ 0.3(Mcl/10M⊙) pc. We show that the Jeans mass in optically thick objects increases systematically with cluster mass. We argue, by assuming that the break in the stellar initial mass function is set by the Jeans mass, that optically thick clusters are born with top heavy initial mass functions; it follows that they are over-luminous compared to optically thin clusters when young, and have a higher mass to light ratio ΥV = Mcl/LV when older than ∼ 1 Gyr. Old, optically thick clusters have ΥV ∼ M0.1−0.3 cl . It follows that LV ∼ σ , where σ is the cluster velocity dispersion, and 3.6 . β . 4.5. It appears that ΥV is an increasing function of cluster mass for compact clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. We show that this is unlikely to be due to the presence of non-baryonic dark matter, by comparing clusters to Milky Way satellite galaxies, which are dark matter dominated. The satellite galaxies appear to have a fixed mass inside a fiducial radius, M(r = r0) = const.. Subject headings: galaxies: star clusters — stars: mass function

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
متن کاملStar and Cluster Formation in Extreme Environments
Current empirical evidence on the star-formation processes in the extreme, highpressure environments induced by galaxy encounters (mostly based on highresolution Hubble Space Telescope observations) strongly suggests that star cluster formation is an important and perhaps even the dominant mode of star formation in such starburst events. The sizes, luminosities, and mass estimates of the young ...
متن کاملStarbirth in Galaxy Collisions
Young, massive star clusters are the most notable and significant end products of violent star-forming episodes triggered by galaxy collisions, mergers, and close encounters. Their contribution to the total luminosity induced by such extreme conditions dominates, by far, the overall energy output due to the gravitationally-induced star formation. The general characteristics of these newly-forme...
متن کاملMass Determinations of Star Clusters
Mass determinations are difficult to obtain and still frequently characterised by deceptively large uncertainties. We review below the various mass estimators used for star clusters of all ages and luminosities. We highlight a few recent results related to (i) very massive old star clusters, (ii) the differences and similarities between star clusters and cores of dwarf elliptical galaxies, and ...
متن کاملFrom young massive star cluster to old globular : the L V − σ 0 relationship as a diagnostic tool
We present a new analysis of the properties of the young massive star clusters forming profusely in intense starburst environments, which demonstrates that these objects are plausible progenitors of the old globular clusters (GCs) seen abundantly in the Local Group. The method is based on the tight relationship for old GCs between their V -band luminosities, LV , and (central) velocity dispersi...
